The Bahian History Project

The 1835 Household Census for Santiago do Iguape, Bahia, records a detailed portrait of more than seven thousand inhabitants of a Brazilian sugar plantation region, over half of whom were enslaved. This website presents detailed research about this slave society. It also brings together a rich set of searchable primary source texts and images visitors can use to supplement their inquiries into Bahia's history. Finally, visitors can create their own queries using the Santiago do Iguape census database.

Katherine Holt is Associate Professor of History at the College of Wooster.
