This section contains primary sources – that is, first-hand accounts – depicting life in nineteenth-century Bahia and Northeastern sugar plantations. Foreign visitors wrote travel narratives which catered to European and North American readers eager to learn more about life in Brazil. Brazilians authors wrote guides for domestic management and how to run a successful plantation. Many of these works were illustrated with images of Brazilian social and economic life.
